Georges Pierre Seurat (2 December 1859 – 29 March 1891), was a French Post-Impressionist draftsman and a painter. He used in his drawings a unique method of painting which been later known as the pointillism. His paintings created with little dots / points joint together to produce a complete painting. This method of Seurat been altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-Impressionism, with his painting of “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”, one of Seurat's most famous painting he become the icon of the 19th century painting.
“A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” was a two years work that spread on a 3 meter wide canvas painted with oil. Seurat use to walk to the park of La Grande Jatte drawing figures and objects while marking carefully the shadow position, then went back to his studio to paint with dense points of multicolored paint the illustrations he just brought from the park. Seurat knew that the viewer's eye is able to bland colors optically when drawing with points, rather than having the colors physically blended before applying it of the canvas. He had about 60 sketching in preparation for this work, he made several studies for the large painting including smaller version of the actual size. The painting is showing social classes members participating in various activities at the park.
