Jan Vermeer (1632 – 1675), was a Dutch painter and interior designer for the middle class. He was only a moderate successful painter in his life time, at his death he left his wife and children in debt, the reason might be of the fact that he produced only few paintings. He was very slow and careful with his work and took a great care when it came to shadows and lights, using expensive paint and bright colours especially variation of blue and yellow.

“Painter in his Studio” has only two figures, one of them is the painter though his face is not visible. He used his room in many of his art works, changing the interior slightly and adding a woman figure to it to most of his work. As Koning point out: "Almost all his paintings are apparently set in two smallish rooms in his house in Delft; they show the same furniture and decorations in various arrangements and they often portray the same people, mostly women".

"Painter in his Studio” also known as: “The Allegory of Painting”, “The Art of Painting or “The Artist's Studio” this painting is one of Vermeer's most complex and largest work and therefore the most famous one. It present a realistic artist's workplace using his personal touch, the painting been made in the 17th century on canvas using oil paints.
